Since I haven't been working lately, I haven't had money. Duh!! Anyway, my granddaughter's (Lizi) birthday was last week and I wasn't able to go buy her something. I talked with her mom and she suggested I make her a bag. We went through my patterns and decided on McCall's 3136, View H, a small duffle bag (pattern is no longer in print). I had some dark pink gaberdine and some pink with skulls cotton blend that I had bought previously with the intention of making a tote bag for a teenager. Lizi is 7 years old, and her mother thought she would like it.
Since they visit me a lot, I couldn't keep it hidden while I was making it. Lizi wanted to know what I was making and I had to tell her. She was SO EXCITED!!! But then she said, "Those skulls creep me out!" LOL! I told her they would be in the inside and she was okay with that.
She wanted to help with the sewing, but this was a little more complicated than I thought it would be, so I let her help me with pinning.
She later decided that she liked the skulls and said she wanted some on the outside of the bag. I usually do monogramming and applique after I cut the pieces out and before I start sewing them together. Okay, I had to put my thinking cap on. I figured I could cut out one skull for each end and fuse them on. Then I thought I would try to monogram her name on the bag. Thank goodness her name is only four letters and I could use my smallest machine embroidery hoop!
This is the finished bag.
Lizi hasn't seen it yet, but she will this afternoon. I really hope she likes it!!
